META: A Qingdao bagasse factory breaks down landed cost for disposable food boxes in Pakistan: FOB, freight, duty, clearing, inland haulage, MOQ.

Disposable Food Box Price in Pakistan: Karachi Landed Cost

A Karachi importer priced 600ml clamshells at “PKR 38 landed” in August. He had used our FOB and stopped there. No freight, no duty, no truck to his SITE godown. On his floor the piece came to about PKR 74.

For importer, distributor or QSR buyer, landed cost in rupees is the only price. Here is the arithmetic.

Start with the FOB number and what it already hides

At 200,000 pieces, a plain 500ml clamshell is USD 0.035–0.055 FOB Qingdao. A 750ml two-compartment box runs 0.055–0.085. A 1000ml container with lid, 0.08–0.13. Gram weight moves these bands most.

FOB already covers cartons, port trucking, origin THC and the certificates (BPI, OK Compost HOME, EN 13432, FDA, LFGB). We do not surcharge them per order.

MOQ trips most first orders. Plain stock starts at 30,000–50,000 pieces per size, print at 50,000 plus tooling. Below that you pay a premium or buy through a consolidator.

Loading a 40HQ: the real piece counts

Pakistan orders move on 40HQ, and volume fills it well before weight does.

ProductSizePieces per 40HQ (approx.)

Cartons Indicative FOB Qingdao (USD/pc)
Clamshell, single 500ml 300,000–340,000 ~600 0.035–0.055
Clamshell, single 750ml 240,000–270,000 ~620 0.045–0.070
Box + lid, two-compartment 750ml 150,000–180,000 ~600 0.055–0.085
Rectangular container + lid 1000ml 110,000–140,000 ~580 0.080–0.130
Lunch box, 3-compartment 1000ml 90,000–120,000 ~600 0.095–0.150
Burger box 4-inch 400,000–450,000 ~500 0.028–0.045

Assumes standard cartons under 20 tonnes gross; printed goods load 5–8% fewer.

Freight is the unstable line: USD 1,100–3,200 per 40HQ Qingdao–Karachi over two years, season and contract depending. It never appears on a factory invoice. Demand validity dates.

Duty, clearing and the Karachi add-ons

Now it becomes a customs question. The rate follows the HS heading your agent declares, plus any regulatory duty or sales tax at import. We quote no percentage, because your competitor’s 2024 rate proves nothing. Duty and tax apply as per Pakistan Customs tariff in force at clearance. Confirm the HS code before ordering.

Clearing is steadier: agent fee, port handling, demurrage, inland truck. Lahore costs noticeably more per piece than SITE.

Documents cost more than freight when they go wrong: a wrong HS code can eat the free days. We send drafts to your agent two weeks before ETD.

Why local PS and PP boxes look cheaper

Karachi wholesale prices for local PS clamshells and PP containers sit under any imported paper box. Some reasons are structural, some are not about quality.

They buy resin nearby, run paid-off machines, and sell to customers metres away. No container, no clearing, no duty. Many blend regrind into virgin PS: cheaper resin, but wall thickness and colour drift between batches. Fine for a tea stall. Bad for a chain that photographs its food.

Then electricity and the rupee. Moulding is power-hungry, and load-shedding pushes producers onto generators. A sliding rupee raises dollar-priced resin in local terms, and quotes are revised within weeks.

A local quote can look cheap in March and expensive by July. An FOB quote stays in dollars, and your risk moves to the exchange rate.

Where imported bagasse actually earns its place

Not in the cheapest segment. A bagasse box rarely beats local PS on unit price. It wins where local supply cannot serve.

First, compostability with paper behind it (EN 13432, BPI, OK Compost HOME): franchise QSRs, hotels and EU-facing exporters need the certificate more than two rupees off. Second, heat and oil: bagasse holds hot curry where thin PS sags near 90°C.

Our rule for Pakistani distributors: import bagasse for the top 20% of the range, the branded and export-facing end, and let local plastic carry the volume bottom. Price-fighting local PS with pulp is a losing trade.

Our bagasse food containers page lists the box sizes we press; bagasse plates wholesale covers the plate side, so both can ride in one container.

Building a landed-cost sheet that survives the year

FOB per piece times pieces per container, plus freight and insurance, gives CIF. Add duty and sales tax at your agent’s confirmed rate, plus clearing and inland trucking. Divide by sellable pieces: inland damage runs 0.5–1.5% upcountry.

Then the rupee. Buy in dollars, sell in rupees, and cost moves weekly. Forward cover or a 3–5% buffer works; ignoring it does not.

Run it three times: 2024 freight, this month’s freight, freight 40% higher. If it only works in the first column, it does not work.

The quote request we can actually price

Half our enquiries lack four fields and cannot be priced. Send these and get a number in two working days.

  • Dimensions and capacity: L × W × D in mm, plus nominal ml. “Medium box” is not a specification.
  • Gram weight: the biggest price lever. 14 g against 22 g on the same 500ml clamshell is 20–25% of cost.
  • Lining: unlined, water-based barrier, or PE. PE handles gravy but blocks compostability claims in some markets.
  • Print: colours, vector artwork, logo on lid or body.
  • Packaging and delivery: pieces per sleeve, carton count, Karachi CIF or FOB Qingdao.

OEM is standard: your brand, carton art, SKU codes. MOQ flexes, and mixed containers across three or four sizes are fine.

Send it through request a quote with your monthly volume, and say whether price or compliance decides the purchase. It changes what we recommend and saves a sample round.

FAQ

Is bagasse cheaper than a local PS box?

Rarely, on unit price. Local PS and PP skip freight, duty and clearing, and often use regrind resin. Bagasse competes on compost certification, heat resistance and stable print.

What is the MOQ for printed boxes?

50,000 per printed SKU, plus tooling. Plain stock starts at 30,000–50,000 per size. Mixed containers work if volume supports the booking.

How many pieces fit in a 40HQ?

90,000 to 450,000: about 300,000–340,000 per 500ml clamshell, 110,000–140,000 per 1000ml lidded container, 400,000-plus per small burger box.

Can bagasse boxes hold hot curry?

Yes. It takes hot, oily food where thin PS softens near 90°C. For gravy-heavy dishes, use a water-based barrier or PE lining and 18 g minimum on a 750ml box.

Which certificates ship with the order?

EN 13432, BPI, OK Compost HOME, FDA and LFGB documents go in the compliance pack. Your agent decides which it needs; confirm before booking.

What duty applies at import?

We publish no rate; classification and charges change. Confirm the HS code and current rate with your agent against the tariff in force at import.
