Kraft Gift Bags in Bulk: 100g, 120g or 150g, and What Each One Costs You
A buyer in Hamburg asked us in June for 200,000 kraft gift bags, medium, twisted paper handles, for her Christmas gift boxes. She sent a sample that had held up a year in her shop; we weighed it and the paper came to 96 gsm, not the 120g she assumed. At 200,000 pieces that is roughly 5 tonnes of paper she had not budgeted for. Grammage is the first argument in this product, and it gets settled with a scale, not a spec sheet.
Why “100g” and “100gsm” Are Not Always the Same
Kraft bags sell in two units and buyers mix them constantly. gsm is paper weight per square metre. “Grams per bag” is what some Chinese suppliers quote, handles and base reinforcement included.
A 120gsm bag at 26 × 32 × 12cm uses about 0.28 m² of paper per side plus gussets — roughly 45–50g per bag before handles. So a “50g bag” quote is probably 120gsm and a “35g bag” is probably 90–100gsm. Ask which unit they mean and put gsm on the PO.
Grammage: What Each Grade Can Carry
| Paper (gsm) | Feel | Safe load | Typical use | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | Thin, semi-translucent | 1.5–2kg | Low-value giveaway, pharmacy | Baseline |
| 120 | Standard retail | 2.5–3.5kg | Apparel, cosmetics, gift boxes | +12–18% |
| 150 | Stiff, premium | 4–5kg | Boutique, wine, hampers | +30–45% |
| 180–210 | Card-like | 5–6kg, reinforced base | Heavy electronics, gift sets | +55–75% |
Those loads assume a correctly glued flat base and paper handles; a die-cut handle drops the rating. Our default for retail gifting is 120gsm under 1.5kg, 150gsm above. Flatly: 100gsm is where most complaints come from. It looks fine in a sample, then a bottle goes through the bottom in a customer’s hands. If your product has any weight, skip 100.
Handle Types, and Where They Fail
Twisted paper handle. The standard, glued inside or outside the top edge. Fails when the glue line is short or the paper is 100gsm — the handle pulls out at the anchor. Ask for the overlap in mm.
Flat paper handle. Cleaner at retail, slightly weaker per cm of anchor.
Cotton or jute rope. Strong, premium, adds 8–15 cents per bag. Common in wine and hospitality.
Die-cut handle. No handle material, so cheap, but the paper must be 150gsm or it tears on the first lift. Ribbon is decoration only.
For a gift set with plates or bowls, cotton rope at 150gsm is my recommendation; the bag is reusable, which European buyers increasingly prefer to “compostable” on the card.
Printing: Three Methods, Three MOQs
Flexo, 1–2 colours. Cheapest per bag, inexpensive plates, loose registration. Fine for a logo. From about 5,000–10,000 pieces per design.
Offset with laminated art paper. Sharp full colour, but you are laminating art paper onto kraft, which changes feel and recycling story. Usually 10,000+.
Screen print. Heavy ink, works on 150gsm up, good for bold single-colour work, not fine detail.
Digital, small runs. For 1,000–5,000 bags; we broker it rather than run it, at 2–3 times flexo unit cost.
One regret buyers share: approving a Pantone on white art paper, then printing on brown kraft. Kraft is not white, and mid-blues go muddy. Approve on the actual substrate.
MOQ, Cartons and the Money
Kraft gift bags ship flat but do not compress well. A 26 × 32 × 12cm bag at 120gsm packs 100–150 per carton; cartons run about 55 × 40 × 30cm. So 200,000 bags is roughly 1,400–2,000 cartons — a full 40HQ is realistic, but two designs in one container needs careful planning.
MOQ bands: 10,000 per design for flexo, 20,000 for screen, 50,000 for a dedicated paper colour (black kraft, white kraft, dyed runs). Unprinted stock can start at 5,000.
Cost per bag at 120gsm flexo, FOB Qingdao: about USD 0.10–0.16 for medium sizes at 50,000+, and USD 0.16–0.24 at 150gsm with rope handles. Sea freight into a US West Coast port on a 40HQ has ranged from USD 4,500 to 8,500 over the past two years; to Northern Europe, about USD 2,500–5,500. Do the landed math on carton volume, not bag weight — you are paying for air.
Pairing Bags With Bagasse Tableware
The combination we quote most is a kraft bag plus bagasse plates, bowls or cutlery, sold as a green gift set for corporate clients or hospitality. Two notes from the floor.
Bagasse has a warm beige tone, not white. A natural kraft bag at 120gsm reads as a matched set; a bleached white bag makes the tableware look yellowed. Print brown-on-kraft and the set looks deliberate.
Weight is manageable. A 10-inch plate runs 20–25g, a clamshell 25–35g, cutlery sets 10–15g, so a six-piece set lands at 150–250g and any 120gsm bag carries it. Add a glass or bottle and go to 150gsm with cotton rope.
Our bagasse tableware range can ship in the same container as kraft bags, and mixing the two in one LCL often beats two separate shipments. For a cornstarch-based alternative, see the cornstarch tableware page.
FAQ
Is 100gsm kraft strong enough for a gift bag?
For items under 1.5kg, yes. For bottles, ceramics or anything over 2kg, no — go to 120gsm minimum, and 150gsm if the base is not reinforced.
What is the difference between 100g and 100gsm kraft paper?
gsm is paper weight per square metre. “100g” on a quote may mean 100 grams per finished bag, which is heavier paper once handles and base are counted. Confirm the unit before comparing prices.
What is the MOQ for printed kraft gift bags?
Typically 10,000 per design for flexo, 20,000 for screen, and 50,000 for a custom paper colour. Unprinted stock can start around 5,000.
Can kraft gift bags be compostable?
Plain kraft with paper handles and starch glue can be, and many pass EN 13432. Laminated print, a PE window or a plastic-tape handle makes it mixed-material and it will fail. Certify the finished bag.
Do kraft bags work for wine bottles?
Yes, at 150gsm with cotton or jute rope and a reinforced base. A 100gsm die-cut bag tears at the cut within a few lifts.
How many gift bags fit in a 40ft container?
For medium 120gsm bags packed 100–150 per carton, expect 1,000–1,200 cartons, or 120,000–180,000 bags, limited by volume rather than weight.
If you are building a gift set and want bags and tableware quoted together, tell us the bag size, paper weight and set contents and we will price the pair on one container.
