A 40ft container holds about 190,000 nine-inch palm leaf plates loaded as loose cartons. On pallets, roughly 130,000. Nothing about the plates changed; you are paying for 60,000 units of air and wood. That gap is the main reason a bulk quote looks cheap on page one and expensive on arrival, so here is how we price palm leaf ourselves — cartons, pallets, breakage, volume, MOQ — with the numbers we actually quote.
| Cost element | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 9″ round plate, FOB Qingdao | USD 0.11–0.19 | 1.2mm leaf; 1.8mm runs 20–30% higher |
| 10″ compartment plate | USD 0.19–0.30 | More cut waste, slower press cycle |
| Inner sleeve | USD 0.006–0.012/pc | Poly vs. kraft differs |
| Export carton | USD 0.35–0.60 | 100–200 pcs depending on size |
| Pallet, wrap, strapping | USD 8–14/pallet | Heat-treated pine or plastic |
| Ocean freight, 40ft to USWC | USD 4,200–8,500 | Wide band, 2024-25 volatility |
| Destination THC and docs | USD 350–700/container | Port-dependent |
Read only the first two lines and you will misjudge every supplier. The rest is where these buys are won.
Carton counts split the market
Two factories can both say “USD 0.14 per 9-inch plate FOB Qingdao” and still be 12% apart landed, because one packs 200 pieces per carton at 11 kg and the other 100 at 6 kg. Carton count drives pallet count, pallet count drives container fill, fill drives freight per unit.
Our standard for a 9-inch round: 200 pcs per 5-layer kraft carton, 10.5–11.5 kg gross, 50 cartons per 1.1 m pallet. Ask for carton dimensions and gross weight in writing before comparing unit prices. No numbers within a day means the quote is not real yet.
Pallets: the trade you are making
Palletising costs you wood, around 8–10% lost cube, and USD 600–1,400 per 40ft. It buys faster receiving by pallet position and less handling damage. A distributor with its own yard and forklift staff on salary is often better off floor-loaded, and we say so.
Two details burn importers. Wooden pallets to the US, Australia or the EU need ISPM 15 treatment and the stamp; plastic avoids the issue at USD 15–25 each. And our loaded pallet height is 1.5 m for double-stacking — if your racks are 1.4 m clear, tell us before production, because re-palletising at destination costs more than the freight you saved.
Breakage: 0.4% to 2.5%, and why
Palm leaf is a pressed natural sheet. It is not ceramic-fragile, but thin rims chip when cartons are dropped. Over the past two years our outturn sits at 0.4–0.9% breakage on 1.5mm and thicker plates, palletised and ocean-shipped. Below 1.2mm, and on compartment plates with narrow dividers in summer humidity, expect 1.5–2.5%.
If a quote includes “1% breakage allowance free”, it is priced in somewhere. We price at zero, engineer the packing, and put a written window in the contract: photos within 14 days of devanning, replacement in the next consolidation.
Volume: you are shipping air
One cubic metre of loose palm leaf plates weighs about 55–70 kg. Round plates pack to roughly 65% fill; compartment plates closer to 55%, because divider ribs create dead space. Our load plans, cross-checked with two forwarders:
- 9″ round, loose: about 190,000 pcs per 40ft HC
- 9″ round, palletised: about 130,000 pcs
- 10″ 3-compartment, loose: about 95,000 pcs
- 6″ appetiser, loose: about 400,000 pcs
A quote far above these means plates are compressed until rims crack, or the supplier is counting pieces rather than shippable pieces. Ask for a load plan with a sketch.
Minimum order, honestly
Our floor is 10,000 pieces per size for stock shapes, 30,000 per size for your own printed sleeve, and 50,000 for custom die-cuts. “No MOQ” on palm leaf usually means someone else’s overstock or an invisible setup fee. We quote setup openly. Moulded pulp works differently, which is why bagasse food containers and bagasse clamshells have their own carton economics.
Compliance varies by market
US food contact sits under FDA 21 CFR 174-178 for indirect additives, with retailers increasingly asking for declarations and migration data, and several states layering PFAS restrictions onto packaging. In the EU it is Regulation (EC) 1935/2004, plus 10/2011 where plastics apply, and EN 13432 if you claim compostability. Plain areca leaf is single-material with no coating — its main advantage. A “waterproof coating” changes that story, so ask what it is. Our FDA testing notes say what we can and cannot certify.
Before you send the PO
Fix plate weight in grams and thickness in millimetres, not just diameter. Get the load plan. Write carton count and gross weight into the contract. Decide pallet vs. floor-load with your warehouse manager. Agree a claim window.
We run palm leaf alongside bagasse in Qingdao, with BPI, OK Compost HOME, FDA and LFGB paperwork on the bagasse lines and matching test packs on the leaf. OEM sleeves and die-cuts are routine. For material choice, the palm leaf plates overview compares rim strength and price against moulded fibre.
Send your size mix and port through the quote request and we return a landed estimate with carton counts and pallets attached. Stock shapes and current pricing are on the shop page. Bring a competitor quote; we will tell you when theirs is better.
FAQ
How many palm leaf plates fit in a 40ft container?
About 190,000 nine-inch round plates loose-loaded, or 130,000 palletised. Six-inch plates run near 400,000 because diameter drives carton count more than weight.
Are palm leaf plates cheaper than bagasse in bulk?
Usually cheaper per piece at the same size — the raw leaf costs less than moulded pulp. The gap narrows on compartment plates and printed sleeves, and bagasse wins on dimensional consistency for automated filling lines.
What is the minimum order for printed palm leaf plates?
Roughly 30,000 pieces per size for printed sleeves and 50,000 for custom die-cuts. Below that, setup dominates unit price and stock shapes with generic sleeves are cheaper.
Pallets or floor-loading?
Palletised for 3PL receiving and hourly labour; floor-loaded if you have forklift staff on salary and want to save USD 600–1,400 per container.
How much breakage should I expect?
0.4–0.9% on 1.5mm and thicker palletised shipments, rising to 1.5–2.5% on thin and compartment plates in humid summer shipping.
Do palm leaf plates need a coating?
Not for most meals — plain areca leaf resists water for the duration of a meal. Very wet or oily dishes over an hour will mark the surface, and any coating changes the compliance position.
