Fiber Tea Table Price: What 500 Molded Pulp Tea Tray Sets Actually Cost From a Qingdao Factory
A Hangzhou buyer for a hotel-supply importer messaged me in September. She needed 500 fiber tea tray sets for a tea-room chain opening next spring, and budgeted “about USD 0.90 per set, landed, because it’s just pressed paper.”
Our quote came back at USD 1.85–2.30 per set FOB Qingdao. Roughly double — not padding, but the gap between a wet-pressed plate and a dry-pressed tray with a rim profile, a coated face and a hot-water test she had never been asked to specify. Here is how that quote was built.
Bagasse or bamboo fiber: which one we quoted
Both are molded the same way: slurry in a matched steel mold, water pressed out, heat dried.
| Property | Bagasse (sugarcane) fiber | Bamboo fiber pulp |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Cream to pale tan, small dark specks | Whiter, more uniform |
| Fiber length | Shorter, finer | Longer, slightly stronger in thin sections |
| Cost in our quotes | Baseline | +4% to +9% |
We quoted bagasse: her tea-room interiors were warm wood and clay, and a speckled tray matched better than bright white. With white linen, bamboo would have been better and about 6% dearer.
Wet molding vs dry molding — the first real price fork
Wet molding uses a wire mesh tool and a tunnel oven: cheap tooling, rough surface, ±2–3 mm tolerance. Dry molding (thermoformed pulp) presses the sheet between heated steel molds at 160–200 °C: smooth, crisp edges, ±0.5 mm, tooling about USD 1,800–6,000+.
On wet molding, a 3 mm witness gap appeared at one corner of the rim. On dry molding it did not — about 80% of the gap between her number and ours was this decision.
Wall thickness drives unit cost
Pulp price scales with grams. For a 240 × 180 mm tray, four-cup format:
| Wall thickness | Tray weight | Cycle time | Indicative FOB price (1,000+ pcs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 mm | 38–42 g | ~45 s | USD 0.62–0.75 |
| 1.5 mm | 48–54 g | ~60 s | USD 0.78–0.95 |
| 2.0 mm | 62–70 g | ~80 s | USD 0.98–1.20 |
| 2.5 mm | 78–88 g | ~100 s | USD 1.25–1.55 |
A set adds a lid or cup insert, pushing a 2.0 mm set into that USD 1.85–2.30 band. Thin trays deflect under a full teapot; for a 600–800 ml pot we rarely go below 1.8 mm on the base. Treat these as order-of-magnitude figures — confirm against your SKU’s measured weight.
Surface treatment: uncoated, film-laminated or water-based
Uncoated. Cheapest, fully compostable, stains within seconds — fine for a caddy, not a drip tray.
Film-laminated (PE or PLA). Thin film heat-bonded to the face; the tray wipes clean. About USD 0.10–0.25 per tray. PLA stays industrially compostable; PE generally does not.
Water-based coating. A dispersion coat, sprayed and cured: matte, water-resistant, no film, roughly USD 0.05–0.15 per piece. Printed or embossed logos hold cleanly on this surface. She wipes trays after every service, so we coated the face and left the underside bare for grip. Her competing quote was uncoated — not the same product.
Agree on a test, not a claim
“Heat resistant” means nothing until someone names a test. Our internal protocols, which we will match to yours:
- Hot water soak: 95–100 °C water to 10 mm depth for 30 minutes; coated trays hold, uncoated soften.
- Repeated spill cycle: 20 cycles of 10 ml tea at 85 °C, wiped after 2 minutes.
Coated trays pass 20 cycles; uncoated fail by cycle 4 or 5. Fiber lines meet EN 13432 where needed, with BPI and OK Compost HOME certification on relevant products; US food-contact paper falls under FDA 21 CFR 176, EU under Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 plus (EU) 10/2011 when coated.
What her quote contained, and what it didn’t
Rough split for 500 sets at USD 1.85–2.30 FOB:
- Pulp and forming: about 48%
- Coating and curing: about 14%
- Mold amortized over 500 sets: about 11%
- Print or embossing: about 6%
- Inner bags, cartons, palletizing: about 7%
- Overhead, QC, margin: the rest
Then lines never shown on a factory quote: ocean freight from Qingdao (a 40 ft container to the US West Coast has run USD 4,500–8,500 recently), duties, port charges, brokerage, and EU packaging obligations under PPWR (EU) 2025/40.
Mold amortization is the quiet killer at 500 sets; at 3,000 the same tray drops 15–25%. If your rollout has phases, send annual volume upfront; it changes the tier.
Where fiber trays are the wrong answer
If tea is poured straight onto the tray all day, melamine lasts longer. A dishwasher will break fiber down. What fiber does well: it insulates the table from a hot pot and disposes cleanly.
What to send in your RFQ
- Outer dimensions and the footprint your teapot needs.
- Wall thickness or tray weight in grams.
- Coated, laminated or uncoated, and whether it touches food.
- Your heat and wash protocol, or ask for ours.
- First order quantity and estimated annual volume.
- Artwork for embossing.
- Destination port and incoterm.
A photo alone gets you USD 0.60 to USD 2.40; these seven lines get you a budget you can use.

FAQ
Why does a fiber tea tray cost more than a plate of the same size?
A tray has a rim, often a raised border or insert ledge, and each adds mold complexity and slows the press. Expect 1.5–2.5 times the plate’s unit price.
Can I order a tray with no coating?
Yes, and many buyers do for dry presentation. It stains on contact with tea and softens under a hot pot, so if tea is poured near it, take a coating.
What is the minimum order for a custom shape?
Custom tooling is usually justified from around 1,000 pieces per design; below that we can often adapt an existing mold, bringing the effective MOQ to a few hundred sets.
How long is production after sample approval?
18–25 days for 1,000–3,000 sets with simple coating and print; embossing adds 5–7 days. Tooling takes 12–18 days before that.
Is a coated fiber tray compostable?
Depends on the coating. Water-based dispersion on fiber is generally accepted in industrial composting, and we can supply test documentation. PE-laminated trays are not compostable as a unit.
