Two pallets of 12oz ripple cups came back to us in March. Not because they leaked. The buyer, a chain of twelve coffee kiosks outside Melbourne, said baristas were burning fingers on the base while the top of the cup felt fine. We cut three cups open on the bench and understood in ten minutes. The ripple wrap only covered the middle 55mm of the body. Below that it was plain 280g stock, single wall, nothing between fingers and 92°C espresso.
We run a cup converting line in Qingdao beside our bagasse moulding shop, roughly 2,500–3,000 tonnes of fibre tableware a year, with paper cups as the smaller side. Below is what our own bench measurements say — including the parts that cost us orders.
The Two Constructions, Side by Side
A true double wall is two cup bodies. Inner: 190–230g/m² lined cup stock, formed into a full cup. Outer: 230–250g/m² board, 3–4mm larger in diameter, formed as a second full cup and wrapped around the first, glued at rim, mid and base.
A ripple cup is one body plus a corrugated band. The wrap is 210–230g/m² board passed through a corrugator, flutes at 6–8mm pitch, 1.5–2mm deep, glued around the middle or upper body. It looks chunky and uses less board.
That failure above is built into the design. A ripple wrap is a band, not a sleeve. If the band sits high, the base stays exposed.
Bench Numbers
We ran 20 cups per construction with 90°C water, an infrared probe 30mm above the base, 60-second settle. All 12oz, 90mm rim. Averages:
| Spec | Double wall 12oz | Ripple 12oz | Single wall 12oz |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inner body stock | 210g/m² PE-lined | 210g/m² PE-lined | 230g/m² PE-lined |
| Outer component | 240g/m² full sleeve cup | 220g/m² corrugated band | none |
| Total board per cup | ~450g/m² | ~310–330g/m² | 230g/m² |
| Outer surface at 90°C, 30s | 58–61°C | 62–66°C band / 74°C base | 78–81°C |
| Cup weight, empty | 15.5–17g | 12.5–13.5g | 10.5–11.5g |
| FOB Qingdao, 100k pcs, 1-colour | US$0.040–0.052 | US$0.031–0.040 | US$0.024–0.030 |
| Cups per 40HQ | ~430,000 | ~560,000 | ~650,000 |
| MOQ, custom print | 50,000 | 50,000 | 50,000 |
Same machine, same shift, same pulp lot. The gap of US$0.009–0.012 a cup is the outer sleeve board plus one extra forming station. At 400 cups a day that is US$3.60–4.80 daily, which most operators accept once they stop buying sleeves.
Where Ripple Actually Wins
Festival stands, kiosks with no sleeve budget, and humid shipping lanes. The flutes trap dead air and the cup is lighter, so a 40HQ holds about 130,000 more than double wall. If the buyer pays their own sea freight to Lagos or Santos, that loading edge can outweigh a 300-degree thermal difference. Ripple also forms faster — one body cycle plus a wrap pass, not two full body cycles.
What Buyers Keep Getting Wrong
Lid fit first. A double wall rim is 3–4mm thicker than single wall. Lids sized for single wall 90mm cups sit loose and pop off under a machine-lid press. Send your lid supplier the measured rim OD, not the cup family name. We now ship a rim gauge with every first sample order.
Print registration second. The outer body is a separate printed sheet. Drift at the seam can climb or drop a logo a couple of millimetres between cups. For a wordmark that must sit level, print the outer sleeve at 200gsm rather than 240 — thinner board wraps tighter, drift falls, and it is about US$0.002 cheaper.
Stacking third. Double wall nests tighter, roughly 2.5mm less per cup, so a dispenser tuned for ripple holds about 40 more cups. That matters in a drive-through reloaded every shift.

Coatings Change the Number More Than the Sleeve
Standard PE lining adds 12–18g/m² per side; the cup survives six hours of coffee but is hard to repulp. Water-based acrylic costs US$0.004–0.006 more per cup at 12oz and moves the cup into the repulpable stream in most EU sorting plants. We run both. For PPWR obligations water-based is the easier conversation — detail sits in /blog/water-based-coating-paper-cups-guide/.
Honest caveat: water-based lining is more humidity-sensitive. A container held in a Port Klang yard for three weeks in monsoon season can develop soft seams. We pack desiccant in the master carton and ask buyers to note moisture damage on the delivery receipt within 48 hours, because that is the only point where a claim has teeth.
Our Own Failure Modes
We scrapped about 2,400 cups last quarter. Glue temperature drifted on the outer sleeve station during a night shift, sleeves slid 1.5mm and opened a sliver of bare body near the base. Nothing leaked, but a buyer’s QA would have flagged it, rightly. We now gauge sleeve position every 30 minutes instead of every two hours.
And plainly: double wall is not our cheapest product to make, or to store. A 40HQ of double wall 12oz weighs about 7.3 tonnes and eats most of a warehouse bay. A distributor buying 200,000 and reselling to small cafés carries a storage cost per cup higher than the margin. Some of them order ripple for that reason alone and keep double wall for premium accounts.
Certification, Briefly
Our export cups carry FDA 21 CFR 176.170 compliance for the US, LFGB for Germany, EU 10/2011 for plastic food-contact layers. Compostability certification (EN 13432, ASTM D6400, BPI, OK Compost HOME) applies only when the lining is repulpable or compostable. A PE-lined double wall cup is not compostable, even though the paper is. Buyers miss this often. /certifications/ lists what each certificate covers.
Printed double wall runs 25–30 days after artwork approval plus 3–4 days to Qingdao port. We hold 20,000 pcs buffer stock of plain 8oz, 12oz and 16oz and quote print runs against line schedule.
FAQ
Are double wall cups better than ripple for hot drinks?
For hand comfort, yes, measured at the base. Our 90°C test showed the double wall outer surface 15–18°C cooler at the base than a ripple with an exposed lower body. On the ribbed band itself the gap is only 4–6°C. If your ripple supplier wraps low enough to cover the grip zone, the practical difference shrinks.
Can double wall paper cups go in the microwave?
Only if lining and print allow it. PE-lined cups soften and seams can fail after 60–90 seconds. Most are built for pour-and-drink. See /blog/can-you-microwave-compostable-paper-cups/ for the test method we use.
What is the MOQ for custom printed double wall cups?
50,000 per size for one or two-colour flexo, 100,000 for four-colour offset full wrap. Plain stock starts at 10,000 per size from buffer. Samples run 7–10 days with your artwork.
Do double wall cups need a different lid?
Yes, if rim OD differs. 12oz double wall measures 90.2–90.8mm outside diameter against 89.7–90.0mm on single wall. Order against the measured figure and ask for a rim gauge with the sample.
Are ripple cups cheaper to ship?
Per cup usually yes — about 560,000 per 40HQ against 430,000. Freight is priced per container, so the saving only lands if you fill it. Mixed loads with lids and sleeves often erase it.
Getting a Number
If you have a cup in hand — a competitor’s sample or one you have bought for two years — send the rim OD, empty weight and a photo of the inside base seam. We will tell you which construction it is, roughly what it should cost FOB Qingdao, and whether double wall would change anything for your customers. Two of our last five enquiries ended with us recommending ripple, which is fine by us.
Details go through /request-quote/ or the sales desk at /contact/. Samples of the current 8oz and 12oz run leave every Tuesday.
