If you source tableware, you have seen the words thrown around loosely. “Biodegradable” and “compostable” are not the same thing, and confusing them leads to overpaying for the wrong product or failing an audit. Here is the plain-language version from a manufacturer’s desk, not a marketing blog.

Biodegradable vs Compostable: The One-Sentence Difference

Everything organic is eventually biodegradable—given enough time and the right conditions. “Compostable” is a stricter, certified claim: the product must break down within a defined period, leave no toxic residue, and become usable compost. In short:

  • Biodegradable: breaks down at some unspecified speed, under unspecified conditions, into unspecified products.
  • Compostable: breaks down fast enough, at a defined temperature, into safe compost—backed by a standard (EN 13432, ASTM D6400) and a test report.

Which is better? For tableware, always look for compostable. A product stamped only “biodegradable” tells you nothing about whether it will actually degrade in a municipal facility, and it can fail you in jurisdictions that require certified compostability.

Biodegradable vs Compostable Packaging: What Changes in Practice

For food containers, the difference decides whether your customer can toss them in the green bin. Certified compostable containers can be collected, composted, and turned into soil amendment. “Biodegradable-only” containers often end up in landfill, where they may sit for years and are sometimes rejected by composters who only accept certified feedstock.

Are Paper & Sugarcane Plates Compostable?

  • Are paper plates compostable? Only if certified. A plain coated paper plate may not be; coatings and inks matter.
  • Are dixie paper plates compostable? Most conventional coated brands are not certified—check the product’s own label.
  • Are sugarcane fiber plates compostable? Sugarcane pulp (bagasse) is fibrous plant material and generally compostable when certified, but not always home-compostable.
  • Are sugarcane pulp plates compostable? Same answer—certification, not the raw material alone, is what counts.
  • Can you compost paper with ink / printer paper? Standard printer paper and many inks compost OK at home; heavily coated or foil-printed items do not.
  • How long do compostable plates take to decompose? Certified plates typically break down in an industrial facility within 12–16 weeks according to the standard’s time frame; home composting is slower.

Are All Compostable Products Actually Compostable?

Honestly? No. Some sellers stamp “compostable” with no certificate at all, or use so-called “oxo-degradable” additives that fragment into microplastics rather than fully breaking down. That is why we only ship certified material and send you the report.

  • Ask for the certificate and test report, not just a label claim
  • Confirm whether it is industrial or home compostable—they are different
  • Confirm heat tolerance for your actual use (soup, microwave, hot oil)
  • Ask if it is PFAS-free—many coated papers are not
  • Get the composting time frame so your claims to customers are defensible
