A candle retailer in Melbourne asked me last spring for 3,000 small kraft gift bags, printed two colours, delivered in five weeks. Our quote came back at USD 0.41 per piece. She had budgeted 0.22. The gap wasn’t margin — it was setup. Printing plates, a minimum paper run on the flexo line, and a die for the handle punch all get spread across 3,000 units instead of 30,000. That single conversation explains most of what buyers find confusing about this format.
I run production at our Qingdao plant.
What “small” means in centimetres
Small is not a standard. In our catalogue it covers roughly 15 x 20 x 8 cm up to 25 x 30 x 10 cm, measured width x height x gusset. A 15 x 20 cm bag takes a bar of soap, a bracelet box or two macarons. Anything above 25 x 30 cm overlaps our mid-size range and changes the paper spec.
Gusset depth matters more than people expect. An 8 cm gusset on a 15 cm wide bag gives a base that stands upright on a shop counter, which is what bakery and coffee-shop add-on sales need. A flat bag costs less to make but slumps.
GSM: why 100–150 is the working range
Paper weight drives both feel and failure. For small bags we typically work in 100–150 gsm kraft. Below 100 gsm the bag feels like a sleeve and handle anchors pull through under two candle jars. Above 150 gsm the paper stops folding cleanly at the gusset crease.
A practical default is 120 gsm for party favours and sample bags, 140–150 gsm for retail. If the load has a hard edge — glass, ceramic, boxed perfume — I push to 150 gsm or ask for a reinforced top fold.
| Bag size (W x H x G) | Typical gsm | Handle | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 x 20 x 8 cm | 100–120 | Die-cut or twisted paper | Party favours, jewellery, soap |
| 18 x 23 x 8 cm | 120–140 | Twisted paper | Candle jars, bakery boxes |
| 20 x 25 x 10 cm | 140–150 | Twisted paper or ribbon | Retail, cosmetics |
| 25 x 30 x 10 cm | 150 | Twisted paper, reinforced | Trade-show samples, gift sets |
Handles: twisted paper, die-cut or ribbon
Twisted paper handles are the workhorse: lowest cost at volume, recyclable in the same stream as the bag, and roughly 4–5 kg capacity on a 140 gsm small bag in my experience. Die-cut handles are cheaper still and suit light contents, though on 100 gsm the punch area can tear after repeated handling.
Ribbon handles lift perceived value and add USD 0.03–0.06 per bag depending on width and hand-threading. For jewellery and candle retail that premium usually pays. For party favours it rarely does.
Handle attachment is where small bags fail. The anchor patch has less paper to bite into than on a large bag, so below 120 gsm I recommend a top-fold reinforcement instead of a bare glued handle.
Flat vs gusseted
Flat bags are the cheapest format we make and ship beautifully: no base means a master case of 15 x 20 cm flats holds several thousand pieces. If the bag only sits inside a shipping carton, flat is fine.
Gusseted bags stand up, hold more and photograph better on a retail shelf. They also cut carton density by roughly a third versus flat of the same footprint.
The economics: why small bags carry higher MOQ
Custom-printed small kraft bags usually start at 10,000 pieces per design, and 20,000–30,000 is where per-unit price settles. The reason is setup amortisation: plates, the paper roll minimum and a handle die cost the same whether you print 3,000 bags or 30,000.
For a standard unprinted small bag in 120 gsm, FOB Qingdao typically lands at USD 0.05–0.09 per piece at 30,000 units. Printed one or two colours at that volume sits at USD 0.12–0.22. At 3,000 pieces the same printed bag can reach USD 0.35–0.45, which is where the Melbourne quote came from.
A master case of 15 x 20 x 8 cm gusseted bags holds roughly 500–800 pieces depending on gsm; flat bags of the same footprint can hit 2,000+. Freight per bag is low relative to unit price, so buyers consolidate several small SKUs into one shipment. Production runs 20–30 days plus 25–30 days sea freight to Europe or Australia.
A Sydney candle order
A Sydney candle brand ordered 30,000 small bags — 18 x 23 x 8 cm, 140 gsm natural kraft, two-colour print, twisted handles — for a Christmas range. The first sample tore at the handle around 3 kg because the anchor patch sat too close to the top edge for that paper weight. We moved the fold down 6 mm, added a second glue line, and the re-run held past 6 kg in our pull test. It cost nothing on the unit price. On small bags, millimetre placement of the handle matters as much as gsm.
What these bags are not
Better to say it before a buyer finds out in a warehouse. Small kraft bags are not waterproof — a damp store room or a leaking bottle will mark the paper. They are not food-contact rated, so a loose pastry should go in an inner liner or a bagasse clamshell. Kraft is recyclable in normal paper streams; it is not home compostable unless the specific paper carries that certification, and EN 13432 does not apply to plain kraft bags.
Under EU PPWR (Regulation 2025/40), packaging minimisation is now a design obligation — a point in favour of the smallest bag that does the job, provided gsm isn’t over-specified for the load.
Buying checklist
Confirm internal dimensions, not external, because the gusset eats width. State the load weight in kilograms. Ask for a pull-test report on the handle. If your volume is under 10,000, price a stock-size bag with a label before committing to a custom print.
Our kraft gift bag range covers stock sizes from 15 x 20 cm upward, and we can pair bags with bagasse food containers for shops running one recyclable packaging programme. Send dimensions and target quantity through the quote request form and I’ll come back with a size recommendation.
FAQ
What is the smallest kraft gift bag you make?
15 x 20 x 8 cm in 100 gsm is our practical floor. Below that the handle anchor has too little paper to hold reliably.
How much does a small kraft gift bag cost?
Unprinted 120 gsm at 30,000 pieces typically runs USD 0.05–0.09 FOB Qingdao. Printed two colours at the same volume is roughly USD 0.12–0.22 per piece.
Can I order 2,000 printed bags?
Yes, but expect per-unit pricing two to three times the 30,000-piece rate, because plates and paper minimums are fixed costs.
Are kraft gift bags waterproof?
No. Plain kraft absorbs moisture and marks easily. Damp conditions need a coated or laminated paper, which changes the recyclability profile.
Do twisted paper handles hold heavy items?
On 140–150 gsm small bags, twisted paper handles typically hold 4–5 kg. Above that, ask for a reinforced top fold and a pull test.
Can small kraft bags be used for food?
Not directly. Kraft is not food-contact rated off the roll. Use a liner or an inner bagasse container for unwrapped food.
