A buyer in Rotterdam asked us for 40 × 30 × 12 cm kraft bags last spring. The first quote came back at USD 0.41 FOB Qingdao for 150 gsm virgin kraft with twisted paper handles — then the air-freight sample bill arrived at 0.9 kg chargeable weight because the carton was 46 cm wide. Large kraft gift bags sit in an awkward middle: light enough that shipping volume, not paper weight, drives the invoice. Here is what we see from the production floor.
What “large” means in practice
Most factories treat 40 × 30 × 12 cm as the entry point, then step up through 45 × 35 × 15 cm and 50 × 40 × 20 cm for clothing, bedding and corporate hampers. Above roughly 60 cm in height, the bag stops behaving like a gift bag and starts behaving like a paper tote, and handle attachment becomes the weak point.
Our standard block runs 40 × 30 × 12 cm, 45 × 32 × 15 cm and 50 × 40 × 15 cm, all with 60 mm top fold. A 12 cm side gusset is comfortable; 20 cm sags in the middle on the shelf.

Ranges move with print, handles, quantity and kraft market. 150 and 180 gsm are the workhorses; below 120 gsm a large bag looks tired before the customer fills it. Above 200 gsm you gain little rigidity for the price, because the fold and the handle anchoring, not the paper, become limiting. If you need real load capacity, a paper bag is the wrong product — laminated or non-woven totes carry more.
Virgin kraft vs recycled kraft
Virgin kraft has long, unbroken fibres: cleaner tears, better folds, better print on four-colour work. Ours is FSC-certified chain of custody, which most EU and North American buyers now ask for by name.
Recycled kraft blends post-industrial and post-consumer waste, so fibres are shorter. It looks greener and two shades darker. Two caveats: shade varies between lots, so printed artwork on the unbleached side shifts run to run, and some recycled grades are weaker when damp. For plain natural bags, recycled at 150–180 gsm is fine and typically 5–10 % cheaper. For a printed brand bag, virgin is the safer call.
Printed or plain
Plain natural kraft converts fast: no plate cost, no colour proof, usually 12–15 days for 10,000 pieces. Printed needs a plate per colour and a proof cycle.
Typical MOQ for custom print is 3,000 pieces per size and design for one- or two-colour flexo, 5,000 for four-colour offset. Below that, plate and setup cost per bag climbs steeply. If your order is 800 bags for one event, take plain kraft plus a printed sticker or belly band — that is the honest answer, not a quote for 3,000 bags.
Handles: twisted paper, flat paper, rope
The twisted paper handle is the default: 5–6 mm twisted cord, machine inserted through reinforced holes, with a kraft patch glued inside. Flat paper handles at ~15 mm spread the load and feel more premium on 180–200 gsm. Rope or cotton needs eyelets and adds USD 0.05–0.12, which pushes the product into tote pricing.
Handle pull-off is a real failure mode in large formats. Two fixes work: an inner patch of at least 40 × 40 mm, and handle centres at least 8 cm from the side folds. Ask for a drop test with 3–4 kg of sand in a 40 × 30 × 12 cm bag, 5–6 kg at 50 cm. Specifying 8 kg is not a realistic promise.
Volumetric weight is where large bags get expensive
A 40 × 30 × 12 cm bag weighs 55–70 g flat, but a carton of 200 pieces measures about 52 × 34 × 40 cm and weighs ~14 kg — near 15 kg chargeable. Shipping 10,000 bags to Europe by sea typically costs USD 0.03–0.08 per piece depending on season and routing.
Plan for cartons of 100–200 pieces stacked flat. Mixing three sizes into one 20 ft container usually saves a separate LCL booking.
Certification, PPWR and recyclability claims
Kraft paper bags are recyclable. They are not compostable in the EN 13432 sense — that standard covers packaging that biodegrades in industrial composting, which untreated kraft bags at large format do not meet without specific testing. Say “recyclable” and “FSC-certified paper” where true, and leave compostable language to our bagasse clamshell containers.
EU buyers should read the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation EU 2025/40, which tightens recyclability requirements and pushes reuse in some categories. Large kraft gift bags are normally single-use retail packaging, so plan to document recyclability rather than claim reuse. In the US, FDA 21 CFR 176 covers paper components for food contact — irrelevant here, relevant if the same supplier also makes bakery bags.
