What Is Cornstarch Packaging, Honestly?

Cornstarch packaging starts as plant starch extracted from corn kernels. We blend that starch with a small amount of biodegradable polymer and natural fibers, then feed the mix into a thermoforming line. The result is rigid, food-contact tableware that looks and handles like traditional plastic serviceware but composts at end of life.

A common question buyers ask us: “Is cornstarch the same as corn flour?” In China and Australia, “corn flour” usually means finely milled cornmeal for cooking—not what we use. What we call cornstarch here is the extracted industrial starch, a dry powder that is not for food recipes. It is a raw material, and that is the cornstarch we mold into food containers.

What We Actually Produce

  • Cornstarch food containers with lids—soup, salad, and takeaway boxes in 250 ml to 1200 ml sizes
  • Plates and platters from 15 cm snack plates to 28 cm banquet serving trays
  • Bowls for noodles, rice, and Chinese food, including sloped “slurry” style bowls
  • Cups, trays, and compartmented lunch boxes

Our cornstarch slurry for Chinese food line is a bestseller—those deep, sloped bowls that hold broth, noodles, and congee are shaped on a dedicated mold set, and we keep stock for fast reorders.

Cornstarch vs. Paper & Sugarcane Tableware

  • Cornstarch vs. paper: Cornstarch has a smoother, more plastic-like surface and holds hot liquids and grease better than coated paper, which can soften and leak.
  • Cornstarch vs. sugarcane/bagasse: Bagasse is fibrous and molded, better for dry or lightly sauced food and clamshells. Cornstarch is denser and better for hot soups and items with heavy sauces.
  • Cornstarch vs. PLA-coated: PLA is a thin lining polymer; our cornstarch body is one uniform molded material, so there is no layer to delaminate in the dishwasher or compost pile.

Heat & Real-World Limits

Ask any factory for straight numbers. Our cornstarch tableware is rated for hot food up to 90°C for short holding. It survives a microwave session for reheating—not for boiling water or long cooking. It is freezer-safe down to about -20°C. Do not soak it in oil for hours, and avoid direct flame or grill contact; this is tableware, not cookware.

Compostability

Our cornstarch products are certified to EN 13432 (EU) and ASTM D6400 (US), meaning they break down in an industrial composting facility within the certification window. Under home composting conditions they are slower—typically several months to a year depending on temperature and moisture. If home composting is your requirement, tell us up front and we will match you to the right formulation.

Why Buy Direct From the Factory

  • You talk to production engineers, not account managers reading a catalogue
  • Custom molds, sizes, imprint, and packaging are quoted from the machine floor
  • MOQ, lead time, and freight are one conversation away
  • Certificates and test reports come straight from our quality lab

FAQ: Sourcing Cornstarch Tableware From the Factory

What exactly is “cornstarch tableware” made of?

It is PLA blended with cornstarch and mineral fillers, thermoformed into plates, bowls, clamshells and trays. It is not the same material as bagasse (which is molded sugarcane fibre), so the two behave differently in heat and rigidity — a point most catalogue pages blur together.

Is cornstarch tableware microwavable and heat-safe?

Our cornstarch plates handle typical reheating well, but there is a ceiling: sustained contact above roughly 90–100 °C, or heavy oily food in a thin-wall piece, can soften the material. Real heat limits vary by SKU thickness, so confirm the exact item’s rating before promising a customer it is microwave-safe.

How does cornstarch compare with bagasse on price and performance?

Cornstarch gives you a smoother, brighter finish and good water resistance; bagasse tends to be stiffer and cheaper at equivalent size. Cornstarch pieces usually run a little above bagasse on unit price. If you are weighing the two for a takeaway programme, our comparison of cornstarch vs plastic containers walks through where each one actually wins.

What is the MOQ and lead time for a first order?

Standard cornstarch SKUs start around 30,000–50,000 pcs per item, with 15–30 day lead times from Qingdao depending on moulding queue. A mixed-container first order is normal — you do not have to commit to a single SKU to get factory pricing.

Can cornstarch clamshells be certified compostable?

Yes, provided the resin and any coating are certified — look for EN 13432 or ASTM D6400, and note that home-compostable (OK Compost HOME) is a stricter, separate claim. See ASTM D6400 vs EN 13432 vs OK Compost HOME for how the standards differ by market.

How do I get a real quote instead of a list price?

Send the SKUs, sizes, annual volume and target port through the request a quote form; we return FOB Qingdao pricing, lead times and freight estimates for your route. If you want to test before committing, ask for a sample set of the 9-inch cornstarch clamshell and matching cornstarch plates.
