Double Wall Paper Cups White: Ink, Board and Yellowing Risks

TITLE: Double Wall Paper Cups White: Ink, Board and Yellowing Risks

SLUG: double-wall-paper-cups-white

META: White double wall paper cups show defects kraft hides: face paper weight, brightener, glue line and storage yellowing, priced by a Qingdao cup factory.

Two pallets of white 12oz double wall cups, opened in a Melbourne warehouse in April, came back cream at the bottom third of each carton. The cups were 14 months old, stored in a tin-roofed warehouse through a Queensland summer. Nothing failed a leak test, and the barista customers rejected the pallets anyway, because a “white” cup that is not white looks cheap next to a branded sleeve.

We run white cup stock in Qingdao next to bagasse tableware, 2,500-3,000 tonnes a year combined, and this is the SKU where appearance complaints outnumber strength complaints.

What “white” means on a cup spec

There is no single white. The base sheet is either virgin board from a bleached pulp mill, at 82-88% ISO brightness, or recycled board that needs optical brightening agents (OBAs) to reach the same reading. Both can pass FDA 21 CFR 176.170; they do not look the same under a shop light.

A full white flood coat looks brighter than bare board, since the ink sits on top of the paper. On a double wall, the outer wrap is a separate sheet glued over the liner: that sheet is what the customer sees.

Board weights and where the cost lands

Component Typical range What we run for white Effect
Outer wrap (face paper) 230-320gsm 250-300gsm, 280gsm most common Below 250gsm shows glue shadow and rim ridges
Inner liner 190-260gsm 190-210gsm, PE or water-based Governs leak resistance, not appearance
PE coating 12-18gsm 15gsm on hot cups Thin coating softens at 90 deg C+ over 30 min
Air gap 0.8-2.0mm 1.2-1.8mm Insulation; too wide and the rim bulges
Cup sizes 8 / 12 / 16oz shared tooling 16oz needs the 320gsm top end

Face paper carries the look. A 250gsm wrap is our quoting floor; 280-300gsm is where most European and Australian brands settle.

The glue line fails first on white

Squeezed-out side-seam glue reads as a slight sheen on kraft. On white it reads as a grey stripe, and on a printed white cup with a dark design it reaches the customer as a defect.

We run side-seam temperatures of 150-165 deg C with dwell long enough for the adhesive to wet out without pulling fibres. Push line speed to hit a delivery date and the white seam starts showing marks.

Bottom curl and glue ring diameter also need to match within 0.3mm. A mismatch leaves a ring of shadow around the base that nobody notices on kraft.

On a 200,000-cup run we scrap 0.6-1.2% for appearance at final QC on white, against 0.2-0.4% on kraft.

Why white cups yellow in storage

The Melbourne carton went cream from three things stacking up: recycled board with a high OBA load, a roof space that hit 45 deg C, and 14 months on the pallet. Brighteners fade with heat and UV, and the paper then reverts toward its true colour.

  • Get the brightness and OBA status in writing. If the mill cannot state it, the board is likely a mix.
  • Ask for a production date on the carton, not just a lot number.
  • Store at 15-25 deg C with humidity under 65%, out of direct sun.

Holding stock for a seasonal peak for a year? The higher-brightness virgin sheet usually wins on total cost, at 8-14% more per thousand, and it avoids the returns.

White shows dirt that kraft hides

A white cup shows coffee drips, sleeve abrasion and finger marks more than kraft. A drive-through stacking cups on a counter for hours needs a dispenser and a rule on how long a cup sits out.

Carton scuffing is the other one. We use a poly-lined inner bag on white export cartons as standard, which adds about 0.15 US cents per cup.

What white double wall costs from Qingdao

Bulk pricing, FOB Qingdao, full-container quantities:

Size Face paper Typical FOB per cup 40HQ load
8oz 250-280gsm USD 0.042-0.058 480,000-520,000 pcs
12oz 250-300gsm USD 0.056-0.075 400,000-450,000 pcs
16oz 280-320gsm USD 0.070-0.095 330,000-380,000 pcs

Plain white sits at the bottom of each band. One or two spot colours add roughly USD 0.004-0.009 per cup at 200,000 pieces, and plates run USD 180-320 per colour on 8oz and 12oz tooling. MOQ is 50,000 pieces per size for stock white, 100,000 per design for custom print. Quotes on different Incoterms move these numbers, so read our FOB vs EXW breakdown first.

Heat: the 90 deg C line

Double wall insulation slows heat transfer to the hand. It does not change what happens at the seam.

At 90 deg C and above, held past 30 minutes, we see PE soft spots around the side seam on thin liners and creep on low-temperature seam glue. A delivery operation where the cup sits in a bag for 40 minutes should spec 18gsm coating and ask for a 30-minute hold test at 92 deg C rather than a 10-minute one. That test on white 16oz cups fails at the rim, not the base: the cup still holds, but the roll stops snapping a lid on cleanly.

FAQ: white double wall cups

Do double wall paper cups yellow over time?

They yellow, never whiten. Brighteners fade under heat and UV, and recycled board shifts toward cream first. Virgin bright board at 85% ISO and above, stored below 25 deg C, holds its shade for 15-18 months in our experience.

Are white cups food-safe without an extra coating?

The board qualifies under FDA 21 CFR 176.170. The PE or water-based liner handles liquid contact. Ask for the mill’s declaration of compliance rather than accepting “food grade” on a spec sheet.

Will white cups fit my existing lids?

Only if the rim matches. White double wall runs 80mm on 8oz and 90mm on 12oz and 16oz, so send a lid sample and we will measure it; 0.5mm of difference is enough for a loose seat.

What MOQ applies to plain white vs printed cups?

Stock white starts at 50,000 pieces per size, and mixed 8/12/16oz can share one container. Custom print starts at 100,000 pieces per design.

Send the spec before you print

Send size, face paper weight, liner, coating, artwork and target volume. You get a cup drawing, a shade sample on your chosen board, and a quote in FOB or CIF. Use request a quote and write “white double wall” in the message so it reaches the cup line rather than the bagasse team.
