Is Bagasse Biodegradable? What the Standards Actually Say

A Dutch importer emailed us last spring with a one-line question: “Is bagasse biodegradable, or just compostable?” A supermarket chain had asked her for paperwork. Bagasse is both — but the two words are not synonyms, and the certificates behind them are not interchangeable.

Bagasse is the fibrous pulp left after sugarcane is crushed for juice. We run a Qingdao factory pressing roughly 2,500–3,000 tonnes a year into bowls, plates, clamshells, cutlery and cups. Importers ask us this weekly; the answer depends on the standard you are measured against, not the material’s reputation.

Biodegradable vs compostable: not the same claim

Biodegradable only means microbes can break a material into simpler compounds. It says nothing about how fast, in what conditions, or what is left behind. On its own the claim is nearly meaningless for compliance — paper is biodegradable, and so is a wooden stick.

Compostable is tighter. It requires breakdown within a defined time frame, at defined temperature and humidity, with no visible residue, no ecotoxicity, and heavy metals inside strict limits. In practice, compostable means “certified to a standard.”

The standards buyers actually check

ASTM D6400 is the US specification for plastics designed to be aerobically composted in municipal or industrial facilities. EN 13432 is its European counterpart and the standard most EU buyers reference. Both require disintegration within 12 weeks and complete biodegradation within 6 months, plus ecotoxicity and heavy-metal checks.

Above the standard sit the certifiers. BPI certifies to ASTM D6400 for North America. OK Compost HOME, under the TÜV Austria scheme, is stricter because it tests at ambient home-compost temperatures rather than the ~58°C of an industrial pile. A product can hold OK Compost INDUSTRIAL without holding the HOME mark. If you need HOME, say so before the PO is issued.

The gap between the first two rows matters commercially. A café sending scraps to an industrial facility can accept PLA-coated items. A venue that wants a backyard bin to swallow the plate needs bagasse certified to a home standard, not PLA.

What we tell buyers who ask for proof

Back to that Dutch importer. She needed documents for a supermarket listing, so we sent the certificate pack for her exact SKUs — bowls and clamshells — citing the test standard and issuing body so her compliance team could verify each document rather than trust our email. She asked whether those items carried the HOME mark. The thicker 9 g bowls did; a coated cup line did not. We split the order into two documentation sets rather than blur one claim across both.

The material supports the claim, but the paperwork is per product, per standard, per market. If a supplier answers a certification question with a marketing word instead of a document, that is your signal. Where bagasse is genuinely weaker

No material wins everywhere. Bagasse is not right for long-held hot liquids — a thin-walled cup softens faster than plastic, and 90 minutes of soup is not what moulded fibre is built for. Unit cost runs 2–3 times conventional plastic. Freight is bulky, since plates nest but do not flatten.

FAQ: bagasse biodegradability in the real world

Is bagasse tableware home compostable?

Only if that product is certified to a home-composting standard such as OK Compost HOME. Moulded fibre generally beats PLA in a home pile, because it is cellulose and microbes already know what to do with it. Thickness matters: a thin 9-inch plate breaks down faster than a thick clamshell.

Does bagasse decompose in landfill?

Mostly not — the tradeoff we cannot talk around. Landfill is built to bury and compact; oxygen is scarce, so even genuinely biodegradable materials degrade very slowly or stop, and anaerobic conditions can release methane during what decay does occur. “Biodegradable” does not mean “fine to bin.” The claim delivers only when the item reaches a compost stream.

How long does bagasse take to break down?

Under industrial composting — sustained heat around 55–60°C, controlled moisture, regular turning — disintegration usually falls inside the ~90-day window EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 allow, with full biodegradation inside six months. A home heap is slower: a few months for a thin plate, up to roughly a year for heavier pieces.

Is bagasse biodegradable in the ocean?

Here we decline to overclaim. Marine environments are cold, and certified compostability applies to compost, not seawater. Bagasse is plant fibre and will break down biologically eventually, but “eventually” is not a disposal plan.

Do I need a certificate if I call it eco-friendly packaging?

If you make no compostability claim you may avoid certification on the packaging — but several markets regulate the claim, and supermarket buyers ask anyway. “Biodegradable” and “compostable” are controlled claims in parts of the EU and several US states. The certificate route separates a marketing line from a document your buyer can file.

Sorting this out for your own SKUs

When comparing suppliers, ask for three things in writing: the standard, the issuing body, and the certificate for the exact item. Anything less is a claim without a paper trail.
