A white paper salad bowl is mostly a coating decision wearing a pretty rim. Buyers start with capacity and price, then find dressing wicking through the wall. We convert paper bowls in Qingdao.
A Florida deli returned 40 cartons of 32 oz bowls last autumn. Samples passed, production leaked. Not board weight: the hot line packed ranch at 65 C and that roll ran 18 gsm PE, thin at the corner. Twenty-two gsm fixed it, for 0.6 cents more.
That is the detail a purchase order needs.
Board first, colour later
“White” is a finish, not a grade. Salad bowl board works at 250-350 gsm, 300 gsm the common middle. Under 250 gsm pasta salad bulges the wall; over 350 gsm you pay for stiffness nobody notices.
Three numbers beat the headline gsm:
- Basis weight tolerance. 300 gsm at -5% is 285 gsm. Ask for the roll certificate.
- Brightness. 82-88 ISO is standard white; 92 ISO looks blue in LED cases.
- Ply and fibre. Virgin board is the default.
We quote 280-320 gsm for 750 ml, 300-330 gsm for 1300 ml. Thicker board also changes the rim roll.
Coating type decides what you can fill
Three coatings, none interchangeable.
| Coating | Typical weight | Oil and dressing contact | Heat tolerance | Recyclability claim | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PE (polyethylene) | 15-25 gsm | Excellent, long soak | Good to ~90 C | Not repulpable in most mills | 100 (base) |
| Water-based acrylic | 6-12 gsm dry | Good for 2-4 h, weak on pure oil | Good to ~85 C | Repulpable, mill-dependent | 110-125 |
| PLA (polylactic acid) | 20-30 gsm | Very good, better than PE on acid dressings | Poor above ~55 C | Compostable, industrial only | 140-170 |
Ranch at 4 C: 10 gsm water-based passes a 4-hour grease test. Greek salad in oil and vinegar for 6 hours: PE or PLA. Hot pasta in cream sauce: PE, still the boring answer.
Two caveats. PLA warps by a heat lamp. “Repulpable” is a short list of mills.
Actual capacity versus stated capacity
A 32 oz bowl is rarely 32 oz to the rim. Stated is the nominal fill line; usable runs 6-12 percent lower with lid headspace.
| Stated size | Fill-line capacity | Usable capacity | Top diameter | Depth | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 750 ml / 26 oz | 760-780 ml | ~700 ml | 172-178 mm | 62-68 mm | Side salad, 1-portion deli |
| 1000 ml / 34 oz | 1020-1060 ml | ~950 ml | 186-192 mm | 70-76 mm | Lunch salad, grain bowl |
| 1300 ml / 44 oz | 1330-1380 ml | ~1250 ml | 205-210 mm | 80-86 mm | Family salad, meal kit, poke |
Weigh your recipe. Leafy salad at 340 g is roughly 1100 ml, so a 1000 ml bowl forces overfill, and lids pop.
Rim roll, lid fit and the deli counter
Rim roll diameter decides whether a lid works. Most white paper salad bowls use a 5-6 mm rolled rim; 6 mm snaps firmer on PET or PP.
Deli takeaway gets one of three lids:
- Flat PET snap lid for cold cases. Cheapest, stacks well.
- Dome PP lid for mounded salad or garnish. Adds about 20 mm, cuts carton density.
- Paperboard lid with window for premium retail. Costs 15-25 percent more.
Before any lid sample ships we fill to 95 percent, lid, tilt 45 degrees for 30 seconds, drop from 40 cm. Two failures in five means mismatched tooling.
Stacking and carton cube: the freight line nobody reads
Bowls nest, never to zero: 100 compressed bowls stand 4-6 bowl heights.
A 1000 ml bowl at 74 mm nests 200 pieces into a 620 mm sleeve: about 1,000 per 5-ply carton at 0.085-0.095 m3. A 68 m3 40HQ carries 640-700 cartons, so 650,000-700,000 bowls.
Dome lids add 20-25 percent volume, deciding one container or two.
A Canadian distributor moved from 5 mm to 6 mm rim for a firmer snap: 4 percent more per container. Our paper cup buyer guide does the same for cups.
Grease resistance: what we actually test
Three in-house checks:
- Grease test. 5 ml vegetable oil, 60 C, 4 hours. A translucent outer patch fails.
- Wicking test. Tissue lining, dressing, 2 hours at 40 C. Staining means an underweight coating.
- Flex test. Bend the rim 90 degrees twice. Cracks show here, not in a customer’s hand.
TAPPI T559 is the formal version, rated 1 to 12; we want 8 or above for dressing.
MOQ, tooling and FOB price bands
Stock tooling keeps MOQ at 30,000-50,000 per size. Side-wall print lifts it to 100,000-150,000 for plates and registration.
FOB Qingdao bands, plain white, PE-coated, unprinted:
| Size | FOB USD per piece at 50k | FOB USD per piece at 200k |
|---|---|---|
| 750 ml | 0.048-0.062 | 0.038-0.050 |
| 1000 ml | 0.060-0.078 | 0.048-0.062 |
| 1300 ml | 0.078-0.100 | 0.062-0.082 |
Lids separate: 0.018-0.040 PET, 0.030-0.055 PP dome. Water-based adds 6-12 percent, PLA 35-60 percent. Lead time 20-30 days stock.
The pulp alternative at the same rim diameter is in our bagasse salad bowl range.

FAQ
Is a white paper bowl food safe for oily salads?
Yes, when coating weight suits the oil load. 20 gsm PE on 300 gsm board covers a dressed salad for a shift.
Can water-based coated bowls go in the microwave?
Briefly, at low power, no heavy oil load. Water-based coatings soften above roughly 80-85 C: fine for salad, not soup.
What is the real capacity of a 32 oz paper salad bowl?
About 950 ml usable. That is a 90 percent fill on a 1020-1060 ml body.
Do paper and plastic lids fit the same bowl?
No. Rim roll and undercut must match. A PET lid for 6 mm will not seat on 5 mm; mixed suppliers cause most popping lids.
What MOQ should I expect for a custom printed bowl?
100,000-150,000 per size, for plate setup. Stock white starts at 30,000-50,000.
Are these bowls compostable?
The paper body is, in industrial composting. Most composters reject PE; PLA and certified water-based coatings can qualify, depending on the facility.
